Copenhagen as a holiday destination is a city with plenty to offer. The Danish capital is a city steeped in so much history. The city is full of historic landmarks, influential buildings and intriguing sights and museums. Make sure to visit Kronberg Castle in Elsinore, one of northern Europe’s stunning Renaissance castles. It is the most famous Danish castle and it's known worldwide because of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It was here that Queen Caroline Mathilde was placed under house arrest in 1772, following her affair with Johan Friedrich Struensee. Experience all of this history for yourself with a cheap holiday or city break..

The famous statue of The Little Mermaid is the most visited tourist attraction in Copenhagen is located at Langelinje Pier. It is well worth a visit and the statue was originally a gift to the city, donated by the brewer Carl Jacobsen in 1913.

If you want to shop in Copenhagen, you should visit Strøget. Strøget is Copenhagen’s largest shopping area and it is centred around Strøget in the heart of the city. It is one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets with a fine array of shops; be it budget friendly chains to some of the world’s most expensive brands.

Copenhagen  is an eye-catching mixture of terracotta coloured roofs and copper-green steeples, with placid canals and exquisite plazas, which makes it an amazing holiday or short city break destination. Copenhageners are some of the nicest and most pleasant people on earth and this is the first thing, which you will notice on your city break to the Danish capital.

Copenhagen has a bustling nightlife and the city offers mainstream discos as well as quality underground clubs. You will find a wide variety of bars and internationally acclaimed restaurants which you can choose from. Most of Copenhagen’s nighttime venues usually remain open until the wee hours of the morning. Areas such as Istegade, Enghave Plads in Vesterbro and certain spots in Frederiksberg are usually very lively and full of life.

Cycling in Copenhagen is an important means of transportation and a dominating feature of the cityscape. Copenhagen offers a variety of favourable cycling conditions, which has earned it a strong reputation as one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world. Every day 1.2 million km are cycled in Copenhagen with 36% of all Danish citizens commuting by bicycle. Cycling is a quicker and a healthier of making your way around town.

Another major attractions is the Carlsberg Brewery where you can learn about the history and the origins of Denmark’s world famous beer. And, yes, you will have time to enjoy a complimentary Carlsberg! As well as the Carlsberg Brewery, visit Christiansborg Palace during your time in Copenhagen. Christiansborg Palace is a great place to visit and it is the home of the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Ministry of State.

Enjoy a canal boat trip and view the iconic city of Copenhagen onboard a canal boat. A guide will give you information about Copenhagen’s top sights along the way. It is a great excursion for the whole family.

Enjoy fairytale like castles, cobblestoned narrow streets, canals, old timbered houses, lots of bicycles as well as that iconic statue of the little mermaid. Copenhagen is all this and so much more.

If you’d like to visit other parts of Denmark, we also offer cheap Odense flights and holidays, or you could plan a Stockholm holiday during your stay in Copenhagen.

Climate

Copenhagen is in the oceanic climate zone. As the city is in the path of Atlantic low-pressure systems, Copenhagen experiences unstable and changing weather patterns in all four seasons, as well as temperatures about 5 degrees higher than average for its latitude (55 degrees North) worldwide. The main reason for this warmth is the Atlantic Gulf Stream, which moves warm water from around the Gulf Coast area toward Europe, and the low-pressure systems follow with the oceanic stream.

During winter, the weather is dependent on which latitude the Atlantic low pressure centre takes. With a stable high-pressure system around the Alps, the low pressure from the southwest moves toward southern Scandinavia and northern Germany, producing above-freezing temperatures day and night.

Spring is comparable to continental Europe, but delayed about a week because of the cold surrounding water. On the other hand, in late autumn Copenhagen is kept milder due to the same factor, but reversed. In late November and December the surrounding ocean water is generally warmer than the air. From mid-October to February, one or two storms occur. Storms in the summertime are rare.

Summer is a mixture of southwestern mild, windy and rainy low-pressure systems, and periods of stable high pressures. In summer, high-pressure systems usually bring sunny and fairly warm weather. But these warm periods, which can occur any time from late April until mid September, usually last no longer than ten days.

Getting Around

By Bike

Travelling by bike is the fastest and the most flexible way of seeing Copenhagen.

By Boat

Going on a canal tour of the inner harbour and canals is an excellent and easy way to see many of Copenhagen's striking attractions. Check out DFDS Canal Tours, Nyhavn 3, +45 32963000, canaltours@canaltours.dk

By Bus

Copenhagen has a fairly extensive and efficient bus network. For sightseeing, the city has introduced City Cirkel Bus, specially geared towards tourists. It runs a circle around the inner city stopping at many of Copenhagen's main attractions.

CitySightseeing runs three hop on-hop off tours around Copenhagen in open top double decker buses. The main line leaves every thirty minutes, while the two other lines depart every hour in the high season (June to August).  The price is 150 Kr for a one day ticket or 220 Kr for a two day ticket, which also incluses the DFDS Canal Tour Boats.

By S-Tog

The S-Train Service is the backbone of the city's public transit system. It is very similar to the German S-Bahn networks and the Parisian RER system. The distinct red trains are clean, modern and equipped with WiFi. The system runs from early morning until late at night.
