Beneath the Arc, you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Solider from the First World War. The remains of the Unknown Soldier were interred here in 1920 on Armistice Day. It has the first eternal flame to be lit in Western and Eastern Europe since the Vestal Virgin’s fire was extinguished in the 4th Century. Today, it burns in memory of all the fallen soldiers who were never identified from both World Wars.
The flame here at the Arc de Triomphe has only been extinguished once by a drunken Mexican soccer supporter on the night that France beat Brazil in the 1998 World Cup Final in Paris.
Contemporary Paris is the result of the vast 19th Century urban re-modelling. For centuries, Paris has been a maze of narrow streets and half-timber houses. The entire quarters were levelled to make way for wide avenues that were lined with neo-classical stone buildings. Most of this Paris is what we see today.
