Sorrento

Sorrento is one of Italy's oldest and most well established holiday destinations. Ancient Romans flocked there in their droves to build their summer villas on the cliff tops, which overlook one of the most spectacular stretches of the Italian coastline. Beyond the towns ancient origins lies a modern resort that is still one of Italy's most popular holiday destinations today.

Sorrento's greatest asset has to be its location. The town is perched on the high rocky ground overlooking the bay of Naples to the west, and surrounded by magnificent unspoiled countryside to the east. It also makes a perfect base for exploring all the major tourist attractions in the Naples region including the towering Mount Vesuvius and the beautiful Isle of Capri.

The town itself has a unique and captivating charm. It is easy to see how its quaint cobbled streets and panoramic views have inspired poets and painters for centuries. Sorrento's laid-back atmosphere and old world magic makes it the perfect destination for a relaxing, romantic getaway and the myriad cafés and restaurants provide a truly Italian holiday experience.

Beach
Since Sorrento sits on a cliff top, above the shore it is not noted for its beaches. There is a small beach at the foot of the cliff, which can be accessed via wooden steps or a lift. There is also another, larger beach which is just a fifteen minute walk from the town centre and there are regular buses to the beautiful Punto del Capo shore.

Attractions
For those who wish to simply relax, the towns endless picturesque streets and sumptuous views could occupy days of lazy leisure. Take a stroll down to the small fishing harbour, the Marina Grande, to soak up some atmosphere and the warm rays of the Italian sun. There are day trips to Naples, which, despite its rather dubious reputation, has many fine museums and cathedrals and is well worth the hours train ride.

Sightseeing
There are a few sights to see in Sorrento such as the tranquil gardens of the Chiesa di San Francesco and the Museo Correale, which documents the towns long history. The real beauty of Sorrento, however, is its close proximity to some of the regions greatest tourist attractions.

Trains run to the legendary ruins of Pompeii, which was devastated from an eruption of the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, almost 2000 years ago. The archaeological site provides a stunning insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire and is one of Italy's most popular attractions.

There are also opportunities to take in some gorgeous views from the summit of Vesuvius or boat trips to the beautiful island of Capri just a few miles offshore.

Eating and Drinking
Sorrento has a wide selection of some of the best Italian food in the country. The Naples region is the birthplace of the pizza and there is no shortage of restaurants serving creative Neapolitan dishes accompanied by some of the finest Italian wines. Sorrento is also renowned for its desserts and the exotic ice creams, sorbets and confectionaries are sure to delight the taste buds.

Nightlife
While not famed for its nightlife, Sorrento has plenty to offer tourists after the sun goes down. Nights out can vary from quiet, relaxing cocktails in a laid-back bar or restaurant to wild nights in one of the local nightclubs and discothèques in the main square. Casinos and local folk music shows ensure that there is a variety of late-night entertainment for those who seek it.
