In Thai, the name of Thailand’s largest city and capital is as dissimilar from ‘Bangkok’ as possible. Part of the city’s title in the native language is ‘Krug Thep Maha Nakhon’ or “City of Angels” - it seems that Bangkok and Los Angeles have more in common that just being two neon jungles filled with the world’s weird and wonderful people. We also offer cheap flights to Los Angeles, in case you are interested in finding out the differences and similarities between these cities.
The nightlife in Bangkok is notorious and it is without doubt one of the cornerstones of the city experience. Lately, large scale social reforms have reduced the closing hours of some places to 1am or 2am. But, good news for travellers who like the late late night lifestyle, there is always some kind of late night craic to be had at the informal street bars on the Khao San Road. For those with more exotic tastes there is always the district of Silan, home of the world famous go go club ‘Patpong’ which simply as a spectacle draws all types of people in their hoards. Information & Facts
Visit Wat Pho and Wat Arun
The island of Rattanakosin is often considered as the “Old City” where most of Bangkok’s sights are located, including the impressive temples Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Wat Pho features Thailand’s largest collection of Buddha images and a 45-meter long, gold-covered, reclining sculpture, which is perhaps the most unusual representation of the Buddha in Bangkok. Wat Arun is a huge symmetrical temple, which reaches 88 metres into the Bangkok skyline and it is surrounded by four prangs at each of the corners. Athletic visitors can climb the steep steps up to the top of the lower level of this amazing temple for a gorgeous view. These two landmarks shouldn’t be missed on your trip to Bangkok.
Once your flight arrives in Bangkok and you’ve settled in, a cycle tour through the busy city may seem unorthodox but away from the main roads there is a complex network of alleyways running throughout the city that is very easily navigable by bicycle. Or create a lifelong memory by escaping the metropolis and out to the countryside, passing through villages full of lotus and paddy fields. Cycling is considered as the best way to get under the skin of the city.
If you are a boxing fan this brand of Thai Boxing could be very interesting for you. The place to go for this spectacle of highly skilled martial arts is down in the Lumpinee boxing stadium or Ratchadamoen.
Maybe this doesn’t sound like a typical activity for you but once you are in Bangkok you will soon realise that this is a great way to spend an afternoon. The best place for it is probably the Khao Sarn Road, one of Bangkok’s busiest and most cosmopolitan streets, where people with strange clothes and extraordinary hairstyles can be seen and where street performers and live music entertain you.
