Eating Out

Sofia's city centre is packed with restaurants, bistros, cafes and eating establishments of all kinds and for all pockets. In a bid to beat the financial crisis, most restaurants now offer daily lunch specials at very competitive rates, so if you are on a budget but still enjoy eating out - now is your chance to try some of the better restaurants.

Getting Around

Sofia has a well-developed and efficient public transport system that consists of buses, trolleys, trams, subway. The public transport operates from 5AM to about 12AM. Taxis are the only transport option at night.

If you are traveling by public transport with a large suitcase or backpack, be sure to buy a separate ticket for your bag/case or you might be fined!

Streets have adequate tiled pavements, especially in the city centre. However, they are frequently uneven and potholed, and walking is further made difficult by parked cars, street vendors and cafes. Except for areas in the very centre, pavements rarely have slopes for wheelchair access or designated lanes for bicycle riders. Pedestrian crossings are numerous and are relatively respected by drivers.

Nightlife

Sofia night life is truly amazing – the city comes alive at night. An atmosphere of liberation and fun pervades the night life scene of Sofia. Because there are just a few licensing laws, bars can serve alcohol at any time of day or night so one can always find a party going on. Bars and cafes are usually closing at midnight (or later) and after that the city numerous night clubs are taking over the party until 5 or 6am. There are many restaurants working during the night, providing the hungry crowd a warm breakfast in 6am and a quiet place where the tired party animals can discuss what happened in the night club and after that the bars and cafes open again.

There are plenty of opportunities to see live music. Clubs regularly schedule performances by bands that play anything from traditional Bulgarian music to hardcore, punk, reggae, electronica or metal. The largest clubs in Sofia are concentrated in Students’ town (Studentski grad).

Restaurants

Sofia's dining scene is one that you will definitely have to experience. It is super. You will be able to choose between the fine-dining atmosphere of restaurants such as Behind the Cupboard, which is Sofia's best restaurant as well as the House of the Clock, which is situated in teh stunning setting of a 19th Century villa at 15 Moskovska St, next door to the British Embassy.

Why not hang out at some of Sofia's more trendy bar-restaurants or enjoy some fabulous rustic Bulgarian fare at any number of restaurants that fill up in the evenings with office workers and students.
