During your holiday in Paris, tyou will experience the Axe historique (historical Axis). It is a line of buildings, monuments and thoroughfares. The line of monuments begins with the Louvre. The Louvre is one of the world’s largest museums and a historic monuments and it is the central landmark in Paris. When its doors are open, the Louvre is the world’s most visited museum with more than eight million visitors each year.

The Champs-Élysées is definitely a Parisian landmark that you'll associate with Paris even if you haven’t had the opportunity to see this splendid city up close and personal. The Champs-Elysees is a famous street in Paris where you will find horse-chestnut trees, cafes, luxury speciality shops and it is one of the most expensive strips of real estate in the entire world. To walk down the Champs-Elysees, checkout our deals on Paris flights and holidays from Ireland.

Another major landmark that is synonymous with Paris, that you have to see is the Arc de Triomphe. It is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, located in the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle at the western-end of the Champs-Élysées. Beneath the Arc, you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Solider from the First World War. The remains of the Unknown Soldier were interred here in 1920 on Armistice Day. It has the first eternal flame to be lit in Western and Eastern Europe since the Vestal Virgin’s fire was extinguished in the 4th Century. Today, it burns in memory of all the fallen soldiers who were never identified from both World Wars.

The flame here at the Arc de Triomphe has only been extinguished once by a drunken Mexican soccer supporter on the night that France beat Brazil in the 1998 World Cup Final in Paris.

Contemporary Paris is the result of the vast 19th Century urban re-modelling. For centuries, Paris has been a maze of narrow streets and half-timber houses. The entire quarters were levelled to make way for wide avenues that were lined with neo-classical stone buildings. Most of this Paris is what we see today.

Enjoy this picturesque and bustling city by exploring the many avenues and the backstreets of Paris. You will be glad you visited France’s beautiful and sophisticated capital city.

If you’d like to visit other parts of France, we can also offer cheap Bordeaux flights and holidays, or you could plan a Brussels holiday during your stay in Paris.
