The historical Coat of Arms of the city of Kaunas was established by a special presidential decree on the 30th June 1933. You will find the crypt of the Lithuanian writer Juozas Tumas-Vaizgantas who is buried in the crypt of the church.

After your tour of Vytautas Church, make your way to Kaunas Castle.. According to archaeological evidence, this gothic style castle was built in the mid 14th Century. At the beginning of the 21st Century, one-third of the castle was still standing. It is located on the banks of the Nemanas River. Today, the Round Tower of Kaunas Castle houses an art gallery.

For those of you who enjoy history, you have to visit the Kaunas Fortress. Kaunas Fortress is the remains of a fortress complex, which was constructed and renovated between 1882 and 1915 to protect the Russian Empire’s western borders. Kaunas Fortress was designated a first-class fortress in 1887. During the First World War, it was the largest defensive structure in the entire state, which occupies 65km squared. For those of you who are interested in this part of history, you will have to explore the Ninth Fort with a fine toothcomb. Ninth Fort is part of Kaunas Fortress so you won’t have to travel too far.

After the Nazi’s occupation of Lithuania, Kaunas fortress was used as a place of execution for captured Soviets, Jews as well as others. It’s a great place to see up close and in person but you are guaranteed to encounter a chilling experience in the Ninth Fort.

Napoleon’s Hill otherwise known as Jiesia (Pajesys), hill fort mound can be found on the left bank of the Nemanas River, between a number of railway bridges and the Panemune. It’s 63.3 metres high. It has been called Napoleon’s Hill since the 19th Century and it is understood that from this particular hill Napoleon I of France watched as his Grande Armee crossed the Nemanas River during the French invasion of Russia in June 1812.

Climate

Kaunas features a warm and humid continental climate. Despite its northern location, the climate in Kaunas is relatively mild compared to other locations in similar latitudes, mainly because of the Baltic Sea. Because of its latitude, daylight in Kaunas extends 17 hours in midsummer, to only around 7 hours in midwinter. The Kazlu Ruda Forest, west of Kaunas, creates a microclimate around the city, regulating humidity and temperature of the air, and protecting it from strong western winds.

Summers in Kaunas are warm and pleasant with average daytime high temperatures of 21–22 °C and lows of around 12 °C, but temperatures could reach 30 °C on some days. Winters are relatively cold, and sometimes snowy with average temperatures ranging from -8 to 0 °C, and rarely drop below −15 °C. Spring and autumn are generally cool to mild.

Eating Out

During your Kaunas holiday, you should at least try these national dishes, which include Piršteliai prie alaus  (thin, rolled-up puff pastries served with beer, Cepelinai (or didžkukuliai) su spirgučiais  (potato balls with meat) Plokštainis (a meal of potatoes),  Bulviniai blynai (grated potato pancakes) with different sauces, Virtinukai  (curd patties) and Šaltnosiukai (dumplings filled with lingonberries),  

Silkė can be marinated, baked, fried or served in aspic herring. Lithuanian’s love their soups. So why don’t you try Šaltibarščiai (a summer soup based on beets and soured milk), Juka (blood soup) or Cabbage soup flavoured with carrots, ham, onions. Ruginė duona (dark rye bread) is very advisable to try with soups. Lithuanian cuisine is also famous for wide use of wild berries, mushrooms, and cheese.

 

Getting Around

Buses serve the least popular routes, including suburban areas. Some go once in two hours, so you are advised to check the timetables if you wish to get a bus in Kaunas. Micro-buses (shared taxis) are private and they are the fastest and the most frequent mode of transportation in Kaunas.

The public transport system works from 5:30-6:00 to some 22:00-23:00. At nights there are only very limited services of special bus routes marked with letter N. The airport bus is synchronized with flight times and operates longer. There is a modern information system at the main stops where special screens show the upcoming transport and waiting times. The destination of each bus and trolleybus is written on the vehicles themselves.

Everything you will require can be discovered on the one central strip that neatly divides the old and new parts of the Kaunas between Laisvės and Vilniaus. Kaunas is quickly following the capital city of Vilnius with the construction of several large indoor shopping centres, which a welcome addition during the freezing winter months.
