Rotterdam is an ideal holiday and city break destination since it’s one of Europe’s most multicultural and vibrant cities. It is well known for its University (Erasmus), its cutting edge architecture, a striking riverside setting and a lively cultural life.

Rotterdam is often referred to as the ‘’Gateway to Europe.’’

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest Port in Europe and it is one of the busiest ports in the world. The city of Rotterdam is currently going through a sort of renaissance with some urban architecture projects, a nightlife and many summer festivals that celebrate the city’s multi-cultural population and identity.

When you are on your holidyay or city break in Rotterdam, you are bound to hear many sayings by citizens of Rotterdam about life in this beautiful Dutch city. One of them is ‘’Amsterdam to Party, Den Haag (The Hague) to Live, Rotterdam to Work.’’ Another one, which is more popular by the inhabitants of Rotterdam is ‘’Money is earned in Rotterdam, divided in The Hague and spent in Amsterdam. And another saying that reflects both the rivalry between Rotterdam and Amsterdam is ‘’Amsterdam has it, Rotterdam doesn’t need it.’’

In the first decades of the 20th Century, some influential architecture in the modern style was built in Rotterdam. Some notable buildings with this type of architecture are the Van Nelle Fabrek (1929), which is a monument of modern factory designed by Brinkman en Van der Vlugt, Feyenoord’s football stadium, De Kwip (1936), which was also designed by Brinkman en Van der Vlugt.

During the early stages of the Second World War the centre of Rotterdam was bombed by the Germans, which destroyed many of the older buildings in the city centre. After initial crisis re-construction the centre of Rotterdam has become the site of ambitious new architecture.

When you reach Rotterdam, you have to visit the Euromast. The Euromast is an observation tower, designed by Hugh Maaskant and it was constructed between 1958 and 1960. It is located at Parkhaven 20 and it was specially built for the 1960 Floriade and it has been listed as a monument since 2010.

The Euromast has a crow’s nest observation platform 96 metres (315ft) above ground as well as a restaurant. Originally, 101 metres in height, the Euromast was the tallest building in Rotterdam. Why not try some abseiling at the Euromast? Enjoy the only abseil in Europe where you travel downwards from 100 metres free in space. Experience the ultimate adrenaline rush and take in the panoramic views of Rotterdam during your descent.

More than three million people a year visit Rotterdam’s attractions and you can be one of them with our city breaks to Rotterdam from Ireland at the best rates available. Whether it is high in the sky, on the water or among nature, the wonderful city of Rotterdam has something special for everyone to enjoy.

Rotterdam’s City Hall is an iconic building in the city and it is definitely worth a visit. Queen Wilhelmina laid its maiden foundation stone on the 15th July 1915. It is located in Coolsingel opposite Stadhuisplein.

Holidays or short city breaks to Rotterdam aren’t the same without visiting the Grote of Saint Laurenskerk (Lauren’s Church). You will definitely enjoy visiting this gothic building. Definitely bring the camera.

According to many locals, Laurenskerk symbolises Rotterdam’s history. During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of this city were able to buy citizenship of the city by contributing 3,000 stones for the construction of the towers.

It is a charming and elegant building with an extraordinary ambience, which you have to see. It isn’t only visited by tourists or churchgoers, but the setting of Saint Laurenskerk is used to host concerts, exhibitions, parties and even lectures.

To be honest, Rotterdam is an attraction in itself. During your thorough exploration of the city, you are sure to discover so many amazing landmarks that are hidden around every corner. You will find some spectacular gems from magnificent architecture and statues to the sculpture route on Westersingel.

The World Port city of Rotterdam is a city that you have to at least experience once in your life. It is a young and dynamic city that you have to see for yourself. Rotterdam is an ever-changing city, which you will rediscover time and time again.

Getting Around

Like any city in The Netherlands, Rotterdam is very, very bicycle-friendly. Getting around by bike is probably the fastest way of travel within the city. There are separate bike lanes on most major streets and there are separate traffic lights for bicyclists. Avoid getting your tire in the tram rails. Always cross tram rails at an angle. Always lock your bike securely when leaving it, preferably chained to a fixed object.

The public transport system in Rotterdam is very well organized.

By Metro

There are five metro lines operated by RET. Lines A (green), B (yellow) and C (red), formerly known as Calandlijn, share tracks between Schiedam Centrum and Capelsebrug and offer an east-west connection. Lines D (light blue, formerly known as Erasmuslijn) and E (blue, also known as RandstadRail) share tracks between Rotterdam Centraal and Slinge and offer a north-south connection. Interchange between all lines is possible on Beurs station in the city center.

Lines A, B and C operate each every 10 minutes which allows 3-4 minute intervals on the main section between Schiedam Centrum and Capelsebrug. Lines D and E operate every 10 minutes, which give shorter intervals between Rotterdam Centraal and Slinge. There is a more frequent service during rush hours. The Rotterdam Metro operates from 5:30 until midnight.

By Tram

RET operates eight tramlines. All tram lines except line two will stop at Rotterdam Centraal. Tram stops provide a detailed map of the public transport system. All lines operate every ten minutes with more frequent service during rush hours on some lines. Each tram has a conductor.

By Bus

Multiple companies operate buses in Rotterdam, RET, Arriva and Connexxion. These companies share some of the bus stops, but the route numbers are not interchangeable. RET is the larger operator in the metropolitan area itself, while ARRIVA and Connexxion service areas outside the metropolitan area. Use the front door when boarding a bus.

Night Bus

RET operates a night bus service on Friday and Saturday nights. Single Fare - €4.50 with an OV-Chipkaart or €5.00 for a ticket from the driver.
