You will come across seventeen bridges that span the banks of the estuary inside the city limits. The most interesting ones to see when you're in Bilbao is Zubizuri, which means White in Basque, is a pedestrian footbridge that was designed by Santiago Calatrava, which opened in 1997 and the Princes of Spain Bridge, also known as ‘’La Salve,’’ which is a suspension bridge that opened in 1972 and which was redesigned by the French conceptual artist Daniel Bureu in 2007. Deusto Bridge is a bascule bridge opened in 1936, modelled after the Michigan Avenue Bridge in Chicago.

When one thinks of Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum instantly comes to mind. The Guggenheim Museum features exhibitions organised by the Guggenheim Foundation and by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

In 1991 the city of Bilbao was in the middle of making big plans for construction to hit the city on a massive scale and the city also planned to build a first-class cultural facility. An architectural competition led to the selection of the Californian based architect Gehry, who was known for his use of unorthodox materials and inventive forms and his sensitivity to the urban environment.

The buildings glass atrium refers to the famous rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright’s New York Guggenheim, and it’s the largest gallery, it is traversed by Bilbao’s Puente de la Salve, a vehicular bridge, which serves as one of the main gateways to the city.

Following its construction in 1997, an international audience, including Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia celebrated the opening of Bilbao’s new Guggenheim Museum.

During your holiday to Bilbao, why don’t you hit the town and enjoy an evening at Bilbao’s Opera House, Teatro Arriaga. Jocuin Rucoba built Teatro Arriaga in 1890 in Neo-Baroque style. He is the same architect who built Bilbao City Hall. Teatro Arriaga is named after Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, who was known as the Spanish Mozart.

When in Bilbao you have to make your way to Mount Artxanda, which is one of the two small mountain ranges that delimit the Spanish municipality of Bilbao. Compared to Mount Pagasarri it is lower, but closer to the city centre. It has suffered from more intense urbanisation.

The Artxanda Funicular links downtown Bilbao with a recreational area at the top of the mountain. It has a park, a number of restaurants, a hotel and a sports complex. This area is very popular among Bilbao’s population and it offers breathtaking and stunning views of the city of Bilbao.

Holidays and city breaks to Bilbao wouldn’t be the same without taking in a soccer match.
