Valencia is the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia and it’s the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona. It’s located on the banks of the Turia River, on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, fronting the Gulf of Valencia.

Valencia enjoys a sub-tropical climate on the borderline of the Mediterranean Climate, and semi-arid climate, with very mild winters and long warm to hot summers, is such a perfect city break destination for any tourist.

Valencia is both Spain and distinct from Spain. It was in Muslim hands for five centuries. Valencia’s Christian European History has been shaped as much as Catalonia, its neighbour to the north, as by Castilla.

The city of Valencia is well known internationally. It’s famed for its nightlife with the Falles (Las Fallas), a local festival that takes place in March, its’ Valenciana paella, traditional Valencian ceramics and the sophisticated traditional dress of Valencia.

If you enjoy festivals, then a city break to Valencia will make your year.

Another major festival is La Tomatina, which is an annual tomato fight. It draws crowds of an international variety to the nearby town of Buñol in August.

Whatever time you are deciding to visit Valencia on a city break, be advised Holy Week celebrations in Valencia are considered some of the most colourful in Spain.

When exploring all that Valencia has to offer, you will have to sample the city’s famous gastronomic culture. Typical dishes, which you have to try, are paella, the Spanish Omelette and Buñuelos.

Explore the ancient winding streets of the Barrio del Carmen, which contain buildings that date to the Roman and Arabic times. It is a great day out for the entire family.

The Silk Exchange Market (La Llotjade la Seda) has been recognised by UNESCO. It was erected in early Valencian Gothic style as a World Heritage site. A visit to the modernist Central Market (Mercado Central) should be high up on your to-see-list, as it is one of the largest markets in Europe. Call us about our cheap flights, holidays and city breaks to Valencia if you want to see these amazing sights.

When in Valencia, you have to visit Valencia Cathedral that was built between the 13th and the 15th Centuries, and it is primarily of Gothic style but it contains elements of baroque and Romanesque architecture. You will find the Gothic Basilica of the Virgin located beside the Cathedral. The 15th Century Serrano and Quart Towers are part of what was once the wall that surrounded the city. It’s definitely worth a look. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Valencia is the home of many medieval churches that you can find throughout the entire city, during your holiday or city break. You also have to visit the largest Plaça de l'Ajuntament, where you will find the City Hall.

The Plaça de la Verge contains the Basilica of the Virgin and the Turia fountain and it’s a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Just around the corner, you will find Plaça de la Reina, with the Cathedral, orange trees and so many bars and restaurants.

During your Valencia city break, why don’t you visit Valencia C.F at the Mestella Stadium. Valencia C.F is one of the most successful and biggest clubs in Spanish and European football. Maybe, even take in a game. Valencia’s La Liga city rivals Levante UD are also located in the city and their stadium is the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.

As well as football, Valencia is presently the current location of the Formula One – European Grand Prix. The city is expected to host the European Grand Prix until at least 2014. If you always wanted to attend a Formula One Grand Prix, we can offer you super deals on city breaks to Valencia from Ireland at the best prices available.

Thousands of overseas visitors choose the Comunidad Valenciana (Valencia Region) as their holiday destination, so why don’t you join them.

If you’d like to visit other parts of Spain, we also offer cheap Barcelona flights and holidays, or you could plan a Seville holiday during your stay in Valencia.

Climate

Valencia is often described as having a Mediterranean climate, which translates as hot, dry summer weather and mild winter months. Temperatures in Valencia are particularly pleasant throughout the year and remain well above freezing, except around the inland and mountainous areas nearby.

With almost 3,000 hours of sunny weather each year - around eight hours of sunshine per day, Valencia is known for its glorious weather and appealing climate. Valencia is located in the heart of Spain's eastern coast and the white sandy beaches are extremely popular during the summer season.

Getting Around

Taxi: This is considered by many the easy or lazy option, especially if money is not an issue. Minimum rates start at between €3.50 or €4. Expect to pay around €14 for a trip from the airport to the city centre. There is an average but growing number of taxis on Valencia's streets. Presently, the local government is passing a ruling to allow more taxi licences. If you are lucky you may find a taxi driver who is informed and helpful, but don't count on it. Every effort is being made to bring the taxi drivers up to date, including free language classes to all drivers.

Metro: Just as New York has the subway and London has the tube, Valencia has the Metro. The metro in Valencia runs both under and over ground. It is modern, efficient, clean and cheap. There are 4 lines that traverse the city, all connected intelligently with corresponding bus and train routes. The price of a single ticket starts at €1.10, though the best option is to buy a 10 journey card for €5.60. The metro runs from 6am until 11pm, at weekends the service is less frequent and runs till 10pm.

Bus: The main bus company in Valencia is the EMT.  Its extensive service covers most of the urban centre and as far out as the suburbs. The cheapest way to take advantage of the EMT service is to buy a 10 journey 'Bonobus' card for €5.20. Apart from the regular routes around the city, there are also tourist bus routes that take you to the sights that are really worth seeing.

Bicycle: If you really want to get 'out and about' in Valencia, then a good old bike ride is your best bet. Rent, beg or borrow a bike when you get to Valencia. In many ways the city of Valencia is a cyclist's paradise. The mild, dry climate and flat landscape make it effortless to navigate the city's many distinctive zones. The dry riverbed of the Turia is an ideal place to start any trip. Dotted about the city you will find a healthy amount of cycle paths and green areas that make cycling around the city great fun.
