Information & Facts

Zurich Walking Tour

Bike Tour Zurich

Zurich has, depending on the definition used, an oceanic or humid continental climate, with four distinct seasons. Decisive for the climate of Zurich are both the winds from westerly directions, which often result in precipitation and, on the other hand, the Bise (east or north-east wind), which is usually associated with high-pressure situations, but cooler weather phases with temperatures lower than the average. The Foehn wind, which plays an important role in the northern alpine valleys, has a limited impact on Zurich.

The annual mean temperature at the measuring station of the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology in Zurich (556 m [1,824 ft] above sea level on the slope of the Zürichberg, 150 m [490 ft] above the level of the city centre) is 9.4 °C. The coldest month mean temperatures are measured in January with −0.5 °C and the warmest are measured in July with 17.6 °C. On average there are 88 days in which the minimum temperature is below 0 °C, and 26 days in which the maximum temperature is below 0 °C. There are on average 30 summer days (above 25 °C throughout the year, while hot days (with a temperature reaching 30 °C  are only three. The average high temperatures in July are 24.2 °C and low temperature are 12.4 °C. Spring and autumn in Zurich are generally cool to mild. These values are relatively low compared to other stations on the plateau but they can be explained by the altitude of the station.

Eating Out

Although Zürich is known for being a bit more expensive than other European destinations, there are things you can do to keep the cost of your meals down. For example, many places offer half portion options. As well as that, you can check out the numerous fast food kiosks and cafés too, where you’ll find filling snacks like bratwurst at very reasonable prices.

Along with a wide selection of local favourites such as rosti (like potato cakes), international dishes are also well-represented on menus across Zürich. From Italian to Thai, whatever your taste buds desire can be found in this great gastronomic city.

Getting Around

Zurich’s public transport is very good. The Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) (tel: 0848 988 988;www.vbz.ch operates trams and buses. Tickets must be purchased at machines (located at stops/ stations) and validated before boarding.

Ferries also form part of Zurich's public transport network. The main terminal is at Enge, but it can be easier to board at Bürkliplatz. Zürichsee- Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (tel: (044) 487 1333; www.zsg.ch) operates services to Rapperswil and Schmerikon. Cycling is popular in Zurich, especially along the shores of the lake. Züri Rollt (tel: (043) 288 3445;www.zuerirollt.ch) offers free bicycles for use in the city on presentation of a valid ID. Hire locations include the Velogate at the Hauptbahnhof.

Zurich's nightlife offers classy clubs, casual and alternative bars, as well as live-music venues. At the weekend people come from most of Switzerland come to the city to have a good time. The main nightlife areas in Zurich are Niederdorf in the Old Town, the streets around Langstrasse and Zurich West. There is a lively club scene but with dozens of bars around, bar-hopping can be just as much fun. A night out in Zurich can be great, but quite expensive.

Accademia, Rotwandstrasse 48, Zurich

The finest and most elegant Italian restaurant in Zurich, Accademia is much appreciated at lunchtime by bankers and businesspeople, who use it to entertain their clients. In an Art Deco setting scattered with a collection of oil paintings, a uniformed staff politely serves Italian regional dishes, ranging from Venetian to Neapolitan. Specialties include ravioli filled with black truffles, or baked veal chop with mozzarella and tomato petals seasoned with fresh oregano.

Iroguois, Seefeldstrasse 120, Zurich

The Swiss have never really gone gaga over American-style bars and grills, but of the several that exist within Zurich, this is the busiest and most popular. Always crowded (and sometimes mobbed), it's a neighborhood tavern whose rough edges and spilled beer add to its image as a rough-and-ready burger-and-fajitas joint.

Veltliner Keller, Schlusselgasse 8, Zurich

If endurance and longevity are hallmarks of a good restaurant, this dining room would emerge near the top. Veltliner Keller has been a restaurant since 1551; before that it was a wine cellar. Located next to St. Peter's Church in Old Town, it has an ancient interior of carved mountain pine wood called arve (grown only in Switzerland). The chef prepares familiar Swiss specialties.

Zurich has the reputation of a shopping city, even if not quite that of London or Milano. Especially Bahnhofstrasse is well known around the globe as one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the world. For Swiss and urban design, the area around Langstrasse is a good spot to check-out.

You should remember that all shops are closed in Zurich on Sundays except at the railway stations.
