Climate

London has a temperate oceanic climate, similar to much of southern Britain. Despite its reputation as being a rainy city, London receives less precipitation (with 601 mm (24 in) in a year), than Rome (at 834 mm (33 in)), Bordeaux (at 923 mm (36 in)), Toulouse (at 668 mm (26 in)), and Naples (at 1,006 mm (40 in) per year). Winters are generally chilly to cold with frost usually occurring in the suburbs on average twice a week from November to March. Snow usually occurs about four or five times a year mostly from December to February. Snowfall during March and April is rare but does occur every two or three years. Winter temperatures seldom fall below −4 °C or rise above 14 °C.

Summers are generally warm and sometimes hot, the heat being boosted by the urban heat island effect making the centre of London at times 5 °C warmer than the suburbs and outskirts. London's summer average is 24 °C. On average there are 7 days a year above 30 °C and 2 days a year above 32 °C. Temperatures of 26 °C usually occur on a weekly basis from mid- June to late August.

Greater London is served by 12 Tube lines, along with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and an interconnected local train network. Trains generally run between 5am and midnight, Monday to Saturday. Operating hours are reduced on Sunday. Exact details depend on the station and the line, so it's worth checking the Transport for London website.

London's transport map is divided into six concentric zones with Zones 1 and 2 in Central London and Zones 6-9 covering the outer edge of the capital. You should consider anOyster Card and/or a Travelcard  to get the best fares and beat the queues.

The year 2013 marks the Tube's 150th anniversary and all of London will celebrate this momentous occasion. Visit our page for more about the Tube's 150th birthday events in 2013.

Night Buses in London

London's buses run throughout the night. Night bus services cover the period between the close of the Tube and the start of daytime bus services. In addition, many London bus routes run for 24 hours.

If you're not familiar with the routes, head to Trafalgar Square (the hub for night buses) or check any bus-stop information board. As you'd expect, services are less frequent during the night. Night buses stop on request only: so you'll need to indicate your stop clearly to the driver when boarding or alighting.

London Bus Fares

There is a flat fare throughout the bus network, £1.40 with a pre-pay Oyster Card and £2.40 if you are paying by cash. Travelcards are valid on buses.

Walking in London

Get ready to walk London! Walking is a healthy, free and environmentally-friendly way to get around London. Walking means you can beat the traffic while soaking up the view.

Travelling within Central London on foot can save time, as many landmark locations are closer to each other than you might think.
