The Hajj is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, which makes it the largest gathering of Muslim people in the world and happens on a yearly basis.

The Hajj is a religious duty, which must be undertaken by every Muslim person. The Hajj clearly shows the Muslim people’s solidarity as well as their submission to God.

This pilgrimage takes place from the 8th to the 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah. It is the 12th and the final month of the Islamic Calendar.

This Muslim festival has become associated with the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Many Muslim’s believe that this particular pilgrimage to Mecca has been taking place for thousands of years since the time of Abraham.

A series of rituals are performed by the hundreds of thousands of people who have come together for the week of the Hajj. Seven times the pilgrims walk in a counter-clockwise direction around the Kaaba. People drink from the ZamZam Well. This famous well is located to the east of the Kaaba. After drinking from the well people stand vigil on Mount Arafat and throw stones in a ritual known as Stoning of the Devil.

Many pilgrims shave their heads and they perform many animal sacrificing rituals. This is followed up by major celebrations of the Eid al-Adha, marking the end of Hajj.
