Things to do in Abu Dhabi
By Sean McCarthy

Abu Dhabi, a proudly modern and cosmopolitan capital city. Often known as the cultural heart of the UAE, this city is overflowing with things to do. I flew here with Etihad recently and got to spend a couple of nights in both Abu Dhabi and Yas Island.
Location
I was lucky enough to spend 2 nights in the 5-star Jumeirah at Etihad Towers hotel. The hospitality here is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The staff go above and beyond for you and the property is truly stunning. I particularly enjoyed admiring the scenery from the 74th floor observation deck, which offers 360-degree views of Abu Dhabi’s skyline.
Yas Island is often referred to as the adrenaline hub of Abu Dhabi as it is home to many theme parks. While here I made myself at home in the Park Inn by Radisson. This accommodation was the perfect location, close to the theme parks and the stunning Grand Mosque.
What I Loved
I really enjoyed the Warner Brothers Movie World. This park opened in July 2018, it is completely indoor making it the perfect place to take shade from the heat. It is full of thrilling rides, stunts and encounters with movie and comic book characters. If you’re a thrill seeker the DC Rivals Hypercoaster is the tallest, longest and fastest hypercoaster in the southern hemisphere!
Activites and Places to See
• Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the largest mosque in the country. The architecture is outstanding! There are a few rules that must be strictly adhered to; Dress accordingly, ankles and wrists must be covered. Hugging is also considered very disrespectful.

• A desert safari is a must on an Abu Dhabi holiday. Experience breath-taking rides to the high dunes of the desert! Abu Dhabi Desert Safari Tours are a local operator which offer a variety of safari’s, many of which include camel rides and sand boarding.
• Saadiyat Island is the city’s push to become the cultural capital of the Gulf. The island is still in development, but it has so much to see and do. The Louvre is one of its biggest attractions. It is considered the capital’s architectural masterpiece. With 12 galleries, its collection of art is world renowned.
Shopping
The Abu Dhabi Mall is a world class shopping centre. It has over 200 stores, cinemas and amusements! Check out the views of the city from the food court, they’re amazing! With high end shops, designer boutiques, Arabic sweet stalls and endless restaurants, you could easily spend the day here.
The Yas Marina Mall is home to over 400 stores, an ice-skating rink, a bowling alley and even rollercoaster rides! It is so much more than a shopping centre.
Restaurants and Bars
I had some delicious meals in the Yas Hotel. This hotel is home to multiple restaurants including Amici, which is an Italian. There is a huge variety of dishes.
If you’re looking to try some authentic middle eastern flavours, Atayeb Restaurant is also located in Yas Hotel. This restaurant is known for its combination of traditional Mediterranean and Arabic dishes.
The Filini Garden in the Park Inn by Radisson was another favourite. This Italian restaurant offers amazing food and drink and it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.
Beaches
Abu Dhabi is overflowing with stunning beaches! The Jumeriah at Etihad Towers had its own private beach which I really enjoyed. I also found the public beaches on Saadiyat Island particularly beautiful. The white sand stretches on for miles but remember to pack plenty of sun cream!
I would certainly recommend an Abu Dhabi holiday! This Emirate is so ahead of its time, yet its history and culture are so evident. With endless attractions, constant sunshine and breath-taking scenery, it’s hard not to fall in love with this place.
