It is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, located in the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle at the western-end of the Champs-Élysées. Beneath the Arc, you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Solider from the First World War. The remains of the Unknown Soldier were interred here in 1920 on Armistice Day. It has the first eternal flame to be lit in Western and Eastern Europe since the Vestal Virgin’s fire was extinguished in the 4th Century. Today, it burns in memory of all the fallen soldiers who were never identified from both World Wars.

The flame here at the Arc de Triomphe has only been extinguished once by a drunken Mexican soccer supporter on the night that France beat Brazil in the 1998 World Cup Final in Paris.

Getting Around

By Bike: The city of Paris operates the Velib Bicycle Rental Programme. You can pick up bikes at stations or ''service points'' that are scattered around the city. Pick up a bike at any Velib station and return it at any other. The one day ticket costs €1 or the seven day ticket which costs €5 entitles you to an unlimited number of journeys throughout the entire period of subscription, the first thirty minutes of each journey being automatically free of charge.

The Metro: The Paris Metro is one of the oldest and one of the best systems int he world, right up there with New York and London. There are around 300-stations connected by nearly 300kilometres of track. By using the Metro, you can get within a couple of blocks of anywhere where you wish to go to. The Metro runs from 5am until 12.30am. For the price of a ticket you can ride around all day long if you like. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Booth in the station one at a time, or by one day, two day, three day and five day tickets.

Buses: The Paris Bus System is a great way of familiarising yourself with the city of Paris. Metro Tickets can be used on the buses and they can be bought on the bus as well as in the Metro Stations.
